Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway is partly (snoring) or completely blocked while sleeping at night.
The reduction in airflow causes the brain to wake up just enough that you can keep breathing.
Sometimes if the event is severe enough, you may actually wake up gasping for air, or your partner may hear you stop breathing.
As these events occur throughout the night, over time, they can contribute to a series of health problems such as high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, obesity, sleepiness and fatigue.
Oral appliances work by pulling the jaw and tongue forward and in doing so, opens the airway while you sleep.
Oral appliances are not all made the same, they differ in size, material, connection and adjustment mechanisms and the final jaw position, which is determined by the patient and dentist.
